The initial crop of legal medical marijuana in Louisiana has made it through the first round of laboratory testing, clearing an important checkpoint to legal sales.
The cannabis grown by GB Sciences passed each laboratory inspection conducted by the Department of Agriculture and Forestry, Baton Rouge TV station WAFB reported.
The medical marijuana was tested for potency, pesticides, mycotoxins, residual solvents and heavy metals.
However, exactly when sales of medical cannabis will begin in the state is still up in the air.
While GB Sciences has estimated sales could begin this spring, the cultivator and the LSU AgCenter must extract the cannabis and have that end product tested.
Even then, the product won’t be sold to the state’s nine licensed pharmacies until enough marijuana has been stockpiled to ensure adequate supply to meet demand once sales kick off.
